Butch (Josh Hartnett) and Lee (Aaron Eckhart) are both leaders in the boxing world. Lee is known as "Mr. Fire", while Butch is known as "Mr. Fire". "Mr. Ice". Lee is in the police enforcement team, while Butch is more down and out. In a boxing match held at the police station, Butch deliberately lost to Li, thus joining the police station and becoming Li's partner. The two became friends who talked about everything. The two were ordered to investigate a serial murder committed by a guy named Nash. During an ambush, Li killed a surveillance suspect to save Butch, but failed to catch Nash. The two men later discovered Short, known as the "Black Dahlia," near the scene, and Short was horrified. Li soon gave up investigating the Nash case and concentrated on pursuing the Short case alone. The early release of bank criminal Bobby, who was captured by Li that year, also made Li feel anxious. In order to help his partner, Butch started investigating himself. However, as the investigation deepened and the truth gradually emerged, he discovered the unknown secret behind Li.
