Engineer Tom (played by Jim Badbent) and psychological counselor Ger (played by Ruth Sheen) are a middle-aged couple living in London. The single woman Mary (Lesley Manville) is a GE colleague. In the spring, Ger invited Mary to his home for dinner. Mary told them that she was saving money to buy a car. Mary got drunk that night and spent the night at Ger's house. In the morning, she met Tom and Ger's son Joe (Oliver Molt). Oliver Maltman (played by Oliver Maltman). In the summer, Mary finally bought a second-hand car. She came to Ger's house for a friend's gathering, and met Tom's old friend Ken (Peter Wight). However, Mary, who was also lonely, only felt panic when Ken courted him. In the fall, Joe brought his girlfriend Katie (played by Karina Fernandez) home. Mary happened to come too, and she felt very uncomfortable when she saw Joe and his girlfriend. In winter, Tomnie (David Bradley)'s wife passed away. After attending the funeral, Tom invited him to come to London to stay for a few days. Mary was in a bad mood and wanted to find Ger, but met Nnie who was the housekeeper alone. The two chatted insincerely for a while, and then Tom and Ger came back.
