There is a Tibetan village among the vast mountains connected to the sky. Because the food production is not enough to be self-sufficient, generations of people have been transporting salt to make a living. The son of the old leader Tianni was supposed to be the next leader of the village, but he died accidentally on the salt transportation road. In Tianni's eyes, Kama, the expected successor, was a criminal who deliberately killed his son in order to seize the leader's position. On the eve of a new salt transportation journey, two factions in the village, led by Lao Tianni and Kama respectively, held their own opinions and refused to give in to each other. In the end, Kama led the young people to set out on the divination predictions ahead of the old people, while Tianni led a group of old followers to follow the divination predictions before he became his son and grandson. The salt transport team not only had to eat and sleep rough along the way, but also faced unexpected dangers in the mountains. Who of the two salt transport teams can overcome the difficulties and obstacles and reach the end of the journey first? The image style of the film is wild, gorgeous and soul-stirring, with hidden Sanskrit sounds running through it like fairy music, making people feel relaxed and happy. The film is a collaboration between China, Nepal, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It took 9 months to shoot a drama and documentary blockbuster. It was nominated for the 72nd Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 2000 European Best Cinematography Award. Won the César Award for Best Cinematography and Music Award.
