Synopsis: "Maybe we have to begin to acknowledge the circumstances that make us powerless, and we have to take responsibility ourselves. I believe that Western lifestyles inhibit the development of potential. You should see how stupid human behavior is. It's getting worse and worse." - Director Roy Roy Andersson) It's an ambitious challenge, religion、Economy、Intergenerational relations、Family、Love, all sorts of issues have undergone strange and absurd distortions, presenting an often invisible face. A one-hand statue of Jesus on a cross like a monkey、Mentally degenerated old people spend their 100th birthdays in front of ghost-bearing guests、the father of the fire, the son of a mad poet, the unique visual language, has created the profound dimension of the contemporary world in the mind of the director between seemingly loosely connected scenes. strange events continue to occur on an unknown strange night: disgraced layoffs on the staff of an undignified company; obscurantist attacks on immigrants, with the entire bus stop standing by; and the magicians who play the big saws actually disembowel the audience who volunteered. in the midst of chaos, karl, who had just set fire to his furniture shop, tried to cheat on the fire insurance. throughout the night, everyone was so busy and inoperable. the next day, the level of chaos continued unabated, with insurance companies and carl working hard, the whole city caught in a completely unstoppable traffic jam, and when everything seemed out of control at the beginning of the millennium, carl slowly sensed the world’s absurdity and became aware of how difficult it was to be a “human.” It's a loose film of a series of small objects, full of black humor. Everyone in the film is losing their sense of reason, and some strange and unstructured behaviour has occurred. A minor employee was subjected to humiliating dismissal, a new immigrant was attacked in the street, and a magician made an undue mistake in the performance. One of these strange things was particularly striking, and Karl, covered in ashes, burned down his furniture shop in order to obtain insurance money. In the end, they realized how ridiculous the world was and how hard it was to be human. Awarded: Special Award to the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2000
