Synopsis:On the night of January 31, 1953, the coastal dykes in the southwestern region failed to block the fierce flood tide, and the Netherlands suffered an unprecedented flood. The flooding claimed a total of 1,835 lives and displaced 72,000 people. Today, 56 years later, a film called "De Storm" recreates the most tragic natural disaster in the modern history of the Netherlands. "No one has ever tried to make a film like this before," director Ben Sombogaart, 62, told the afp news agency before the release. "It's very complicated, not only because of the technical issues, but also because many of the actors are still alive." In 1953, this flood submerged 200,000 hectares of land and 3,000 houses in the provinces of Zeeland, North Brabant and South Holland. "The Tempest" tells the story of 19-year-old Julia trying to find her young son who was lost in the water. During the search for her son, Julia received help from a handsome soldier who had previously saved her life during a flood. The film realistically shows Julia desperately searching for her child in the dark, icy water, above rooftops as cattle and sheep float in the floodwaters. All outdoor shots were shot in a small town called Tielde in Belgium. To recreate the scene, part of the town was flooded for six weeks last fall. "It's very difficult to shoot in the water," the director said. "It takes three times the normal shooting time. It's also very cold, and the actors need to swim a lot." In 1953, director Sunbergart was only 6 years old.
