Synopsis:The film is not based on the Bible, but uses stories as clues to show the inner conflicts of the soul. When Israel was under the rule of Rome, a carpenter (Willem Dafoe) made crosses for the Roman army. He was troubled by what seemed to be a call from God. Set out to search for the truth, he met Judas (Harvey Keitel) and his former friend Magdalene on the road. They accused him of cowardice, which made him firm. More and more believers joined the team, and John the Baptist directed them to the desert. After resisting the temptation and gaining greater strength, he led people to besiege the Temple in Jerusalem and ordered Judas to report him to the Roman authorities. He received an angel on the cross. He stepped off the cross and lived an ordinary life until many years later, he discovered the truth of the matter. Back to his own destiny... The film is adapted from Kazantzarsky's novel of the same name. Since Scorsese first planned to put the film on the screen in 1983, collective opposition has been loud and clear, resulting in repeated delays in the filming plan.
