At the age of 19, Julien became the tutor of Renard (Bernard Verley) family and had an affair with his wife S (Cale Bouquet). After the incident, Julien was forced to leave the town. After several twists and turns, Julien became the personal secretary of Marquis Larmour (played by Claude Rich), and the Marquis' daughter Mathilde (played by Judith Godrèche) fell in love with Julien. From Mathilde, Julien saw hope for a prosperous career. However, a letter revealed Julien's gloomy past and completely shattered his hopes.
